The Palm Avenue garage soon will charge parking fees after the first two hours. Get ready to pay a dollar or so if you stay longer than a couple of hours at dinner or the theater. The FREE parking time apparently matches the time-frame for FREE on-street parking.
On Tuesday, September 3, 2013, the City of Sarasota commissioners voted to end FREE parking in the Palm Avenue Garage. The City of Sarasota Parking Division has not announced the date for implementation, but they only need to turn on the pay-in-lane equipment to effect the fees. Parking will cost motorists $1 for the first two hours after the complimentary two-hour period. An additional three hours cost $3. Then fees graduate to a maximum $16 daily rate. Downtown employees may participate in a reduced rate program.
About 26 percent of motorists parking in the Palm Avenue garage stay less than 90 minutes and would continue to enjoy complimentary parking.
The city commissioners expect income from paid parking to reduce a budget deficit.
