Single-Family home builders shared results of a June 2013 survey about how room sizes compare in homes measuring 3,000 square feet or more.
That set me thinking about larger residences in Sarasota & Her islands.
I recently held an open house at a 7,452-square-foot residence in Country Club Shores on Longboat Key where the Master Bedroom measured 441 square feet or about 6 percent of the finished floor space. The National Home Builders Association (NAHB) special study of space allocations in new homes (released October 1, 2013) gives a way to see how finished floor space is distributed in homes these days.
Let's look at Master Bedroom as an example. Interestingly, the Master Bedroom is the only completely separate type of room present in single-family homes. Often other room types are shared with another space, such as a living room-dining room combination.
Looking at Master Bedrooms gives a good idea of space allocation. Even in homes measuring less than 2,000 square feet, the Master Bedroom receives a significant portion of space — about 14.2 percent — as compared to the total area. For larger new homes (3,000 square feet), the Master Bedroom averages about 411 square feet or 10.9 percent of the residence.
As with my open house, in mansion-sized homes, the Master Bedroom stays within the large home perameter of about 400+ square feet while the additional spaces in the home go to other luxury uses such as theater lounges and fitness centers.
