Watch this Space: The Ice House

Do you keep one eye trained on the Rosemary District hoping that the eclectic neighborhood will bloom again? This area showed so much promise as a developing arts district before the Great Recession dealt its blows.

And maybe, like me, you’ve wondered about the Alfstad& Productions whose intriguing website promises to create "a quality ‘White Cube’ multi-purpose exhibition space that will become the contemporary art destination of choice."

Now it looks like Alfstad& Productions and its team, which includes artists and crafts people, at least three of whom are graduates of Ringling College of Art and Design, are poised to breathe new life into this historic and well-located Sarasota neighborhood located just north of downtown.

The contemporary art company plans to turn The Ice House, their new location at 1314 10th Street, into a multi-purpose exhibition space for contemporary art. Similar to Rosemary District visionaries of several years ago, Alfstad& Productions wants to transform the area into an arts destination within Sarasota.

“This is another positive step in the development of the Rosemary District,” adds Michael Bush, owner of Home Resource and president of the Rosemary District Neighborhood Association, in the Alfstad& Productions news release announcing the upcoming move to The Ice House. “As more art-related businesses settle into this area, creative individuals and small businesses can contribute and experience the best that Sarasota offers. That’s a win-win for everyone in Sarasota.”

We remember wandering through the creative fun of the Rosemary Rising street parties in 2010 along Central Avenue and hope to see that energy rebuild in this centrally located neighborhood.

Before I close, here's a shout-out to Derek Barnes and the Foie-Gras Lady, who quietly protested the fattened duck liver featured at Derek's Culinary Casual when the restaurant was the toast of the Rosemary District. We hear that his new Bradenton restaurant opens soon.
