I love the description of the Cooney House as a “lollipop” of a house. The red garage door, the mustard yellow front door overlaid with a red wrought-iron gate and the Asian-inspired brooch pinned to façade add play to the classic Sarasota School of Architecture residence designed in 1966 by renowned architect Tim Siebert. In 2001, the Florida state chapter of the American Institute of Architects awarded famed architect Edward J. “Tim” Siebert his second “Test of Time” award for the Cooney House. His first “Test of Time” recognized Siebert’s MacDonald House where the distinguished novelist John D MacDonald wrote his Travis McGee stories. That house has been destroyed, and the now-empty lot lies next to the award-winning Glass House designed by Mark Sultana.
Siebert created the Cooney and the MacDonald houses during the same year, 1966. Both structures reflect a strong value that the renowned architect emphasized to visitors who toured the Cooney House in August 2013: Attending to the needs and desires of the client. Sarasota Architectural Foundation sponsored the tour.
In the case of the Cooney House, Siebert spoke about how the property looked almost 50 years ago and how he took advantage of the landscaping on the adjacent lots. The family who built the house continued to live there for more than 40 years attesting to the way the home met their needs.
Currently on the market, this classic Sarasota School of Architecture home ranks as one of “Sarasota’s 10 Prettiest Homes,” according to Sarasota Magazine. The residence includes four bedrooms and three baths in 2,184 square feet. The location lies within a few blocks of St Armands Circle and Lido Beach.
When we attended the Cooney House Tour, we gained a fresh appreciation for Siebert’s clear design. To my mind, wandering through the Cooney House felt like walking inside a painting by, say, Piet Mondrian or one of the other De Stijl artists.
