Downtown Sarasota residents extol living at the center of Florida’s Cultural Coast. Located less than 15 minutes away from the famous Gulf beaches, the City of Sarasota clusters most everything cultural at its center.
The Theater District includes the Sarasota Opera House, which draws audiences from all over the world to its famous Verdi Cycle. The Florida Studio Theatre campus looks like a village of theaters – the historic Keating and Gompertz Theatres, and the Parisian-style Goldstein Cabaret.
We call Palm Avenue “Gallery Row,” but there are art galleries or crafts galleries on most streets downtown. Palm Avenue’s First Friday Gallery Walk expanded to include Main and State streets, and the event’s popularity inspired a Third Friday Art Walk at nearby Towles Court Art District.
The Burns Court Cinemas screen independent and foreign films and the Sarasota Chalk Festival takes place annually in nearby Burns Square.
Downtown Sarasota hosts a vibrant nightlife with excellent restaurants, frequent street festivals and music events all within walking distance of the city center.
The Fanciful Legend of Sara de Soto
Sarasotans have been known to make up stories about where Sarasota got its name. No doubt, you’ve heard that the town was named for the explorer Hernando de Soto’s daughter, Sara. Thus Sara Sota.
The embellished tale included a romantic story about how she fell for an Indian brave who fell ill. After he had recovered, Sara came down with the same disease and died. She was buried in Sarasota Bay, and supposedly 100 Indian men drowned themselves so that their souls could protect her for all eternity.
Some storytellers take the yarn further and claim that’s why Sarasota has been protected from hurricanes. The City of Sarasota has not experienced a direct hit in more than a century, but we’ve had our share of near misses in times since the de Sotos were here.
Historians point out that a 1763 land-grant map showed the name Zarazote or Zara Zote for this area. Some think that the word may derive from the indigenous Calusa language and mean “Place of the Dance.” Others see references to the dunes or the Sahara in the first syllable and, in the second, the azure blue Sarasota Bay.
In other words, how Sarasota got its name was lost in time. Federal postal regulations in the 1800s may have combined Sara and Sota to become Sarasota.
