Even after Disney came to Central Florida, Orange County continued to cultivate vast groves of citrus fruit. Formerly called Mosquito County, this central Florida area was renamed Orange in 1845, the year that Florida became a state. In the early 1970s, citrus groves covered about 80,000 acres. I remember driving through miles of fragrant groves back then, but a decade later a big freeze wreaked havoc on the agricultural properties making them ripe for development. Today Orange County hosts residents and visitors instead of orange trees. Read about favorite Orange County neighborhoods.

Often people think that Windermere sprang up brand new out of the development craze that accompanied the creation of Disney World in Central Florida. To tell you the truth, Windermere holds a long and ancient history.
The Timucuans lived in the Windemere area until the 15h century. The Spanish settled there in 1564 and stayed until the United States purchased East Florida from Spain in 1821. J.H. Johnson and J.C. Palmer founded the Windermere Improvement Company in 1910, building houses and planning citrus groves.
Today, the town wears the celebrity of some of its residents who prize the privacy and luxury of living offered in Windermere.
