A Little Bit of Osprey History

When you visit Spanish Point in Osprey, you learn that human history in Sarasota & Her Islands dates back more than 5,000 years. “A Window to the Past,” the only archaeological exhibition in the nation built inside of a shell mound, allows visitors a peek at what life was like in the Osprey area all those millennia ago.

Later, pioneer homesteaders settled here and named their place Spanish Point. The Webb family moved from Utica, New York to become one of the first families to call the Sarasota area home. The Webbs chose the name Osprey to meet the post Office requirement for a one-word place name. They also created the first resort for snowbirds — Webb’s Winter Resort.  At Spanish Point, visitors can explore one of the guest cottages, the White Cottage.

In 1910, a Chicago socialite named Bertha Matilda Honoré Palmer bought 350 acres in Osprey that included Spanish Point. She called her estate Osprey Point.

Osprey also preserves the 460-acre South Creek Ranch left to the state of Florida by Elsa Scherer Burrows in memory of her father Oscar Scherer, who invented a process for dyeing leather in 1872. The state purchased an additional 922 acres from the adjacent Palmer Ranch in 1991. The park now preserves more than two square miles of natural land.

The Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast strives to protect natural lands from its headquarters in Osprey.

Another Floridaland fits in the Osprey story. The theme park opened in 1964 just south of Blackburn Point Road but lost steam by 1971 when Disney World began welcoming guests.
