Sarasota Bay Park

The Sarasota Bay Park neighborhood, just south of Indian Beach, lies west of Tamiami Trail near Ringling College of Art and Design and just a few minutes away from Downtown Sarasota. While multi-million-dollar residences line the bayfront, there are more modestly priced homes on the inland lots. Read more about Sarasota Bay Park.

Historic Neighborhood

One of Sarasota’s most historic neighborhoods, Sarasota Bay Park marks where, in 1843, William Whitaker and his half-brother, Hamm Snell, settled becoming the first white residents to live in Sarasota. Whitaker received a U.S. government deed for 145 acres in 1851 and bought another 48.6 acres in 1852.

In these days before the Civil War, Whitaker lived off the land and water as had the Calusa Indians and Cuban fisherman before him. The middens are still present in the neighborhood.

The Sarasota Bay Park neighborhood was platted in 1920 and includes the Alameda streets that trace the shoreline.
