From Little Sarasota Key to Present-Day Siesta Key

During the 19th and early 20th century, Siesta Key went by generic-sounding names like “Little Sarasota Key” or the full blown “Sarasota Key.” Siesta started figuring in the place name beginning in 1907 with the Siesta Land Company formed by Harry Higel, Captain Louis Roberts and E.M. Arbogast. All three men had a hand in developing the island.

Higel, who ran the Siesta Post Office, opened the Higelhurst Hotel in 1915 even though only about 30 people lived on the key and even fewer tourists visited the island until after the first bridge opened in 1917. With easier access than a ferry ride, the beaches drew more visitors than before.

After World War II, Sarasota County had a growth spurt and, in 1952, National Geographic Magazine named Siesta Beach as one of the four most beautiful beaches on the planet. Soon after, the name Siesta Key stuck, and the island gained recognition as a haven for writers and artists such as Jerry Farnsworth, MacKinlay Kantor, John D. MacDonald and Helen Sawyer.

In 1950, Sarasota County bought the 40 acres including 2,400 feet of frontage of the Gulf of Mexico and established Siesta Beach Park.
