A Little St Armands Key History
A Frenchman named Charles St. Amand paid $26.71 in 1893 for almost 132 acres on the island. He homesteaded the property and kept afloat by fishing in the Gulf and Bay and marketing produce at the Sarasota City Pier. His name was misspelled on land deeds as “St. Armand” and so it goes.
Circus maestro John Ringling purchased the St Armands Key property in 1917 and planned a development around a circus wagon-wheel motif. He managed to create canals, build sidewalks and streets with rose-colored curbs. Then Ringling connected the key to the mainland with a causeway built with an assist from circus elephants.
Soon after its grand opening, St Armands Key fell into a 20-year slumber because of the Great Depression that ended the Florida Boom.
In 1953, St. Armands Circle woke up. Sarasota’s oldest restaurant, the Columbia, opened in 1959. Today, more than 130 shops ring The Circle.
